What About Units and Townhouses in Southport?

More than three in four Southport homes are units, apartments or townhouses, according to the 2021 Census. Each one needs its own compliant, interconnected smoke alarms inside it.

The alarms are interconnected within each home, not with the neighbours. Where a unit already has hardwired alarms, the replacements must also be hardwired. Some buildings already have a compliant smoke detection system inside each unit, which can meet the rules instead, so check with your body corporate before you book.

Southport also has plenty of older houses. In homes built before 1997, we usually find battery alarms that are well past their 10-year life.

What we see in Southport

Southport is a real mix. More than half the smoke alarm jobs we've done here have been units, and the rest are houses, a lot of them older homes.

In the older places we nearly always find battery alarms with no battery in them, or alarms that are way past their 10 years. You'd be amazed how many are 20 or 25 years old.

Most Southport units only need 3 or 4 alarms. If your unit already has hardwired alarms, they have to be replaced with hardwired ones, and I can do that on the same visit.
