Do Surfers Paradise Apartments Need Their Own Smoke Alarms?
Yes. More than four in five Surfers Paradise homes are flats or apartments, according to the 2021 Census, and each apartment needs its own compliant, interconnected smoke alarms by 1 January 2027.
The exception is a building that already has a compliant smoke detection system installed inside each unit, so check with your body corporate or building manager first. Where an apartment has hardwired alarms now, the replacements must also be hardwired.
On Census night in 2021, about one in three Surfers Paradise dwellings was unoccupied, many of them holiday apartments. Apartments that sit empty for part of the year still need compliant alarms. If your building is run as a hotel, different fire safety rules can apply, so check with your building manager.
